Jesus - the Lord Jesus Christ

The name ‘Jesus’ is a Hebrew word meaning ‘saviour’.   Joseph was told before Jesus was born that this was the name he was to be given because he would save people from their sins.   Read Matthew 1:21.

Christ is a Greek word, meaning “anointed”, signifying that he was appointed by God to be a king.   Anointing was the ceremony by which kings and priests were by divine appointment consecrated to their office.   It consisted in putting holy oil on their heads.   Jesus, however, was anointed with that of which the oil of ancient custom was a type.   He was anointed with the Spirit of God at his baptism in the River Jordan.   Read Acts 10:38.

The name Jesus Christ therefore means “Saviour the King”.
